Newly discovered Paphiopedilum thaianum
The discovery of a new slipper orchid species is always noteworthy. Prapanth 'Pan' Lamwiriyakul has recently described Paphiopedilum thaianum, a brachypetalum from low elevations west of Phuket, Thailand. The new species is similar to P.niveum but with a much smaller flower, a thin-walled pouch painted with purple dots on its inner surface, and differently shaped staminode. Conservation efforts are now underway to ensure the survival of this rare plant.
